The shunt resistor improves the consistency of the impedance seen by the preceding xover elements. It's fairly common to just use a series resistor sans the shunt depending on that.

Or, like Sean said, reduce this to the bare minimum with driver matching, or skirt the problem altogether with an active crossover and open a whole new can of worms.
