Seems a still have a wee bit of luck...

A few weeks ago a friend of mine dropped a system of by me to sell as they are emigrating to Auz. The amp and turntable sold quickly but no takers for the speakers. I relayed it to them and they agreed that I can keep the AR-6 speakers for my efforts (Yay!)...

So this past weekend I decided to stretch the speakers legs a wee bit. Played a few songs at relatively loud levels - just below the speakers audible limit.

After a few songs I got the idea "just to check" the speakers up close. Low and behold! The one's tweeter was dead. I was simply devastated. I thought "just my luck". I was also a bit puzzled as I did not abuse them in any way.

They sat in a corner until last night. I contemplated to replace the tweeters with modern counterparts but didn't really want to. I like stuff like this original.

I took the "damaged" speaker and removed the tweeter - I wanted to rip it apart to see how its put together. Just before I yanked out the diaphragm I thought to myself let me just check the tweeter again by connecting it to the amp... remember, the tweeter was now in a half-dismantled state - pig-tail wires "gently" removed.

Touching a run of wire from the amp crackling sound came through the tweeter! Happy days! It worked. After some investigating I found that the super thin voice coil lead-out wire must have ruptured (?) where it ran over the surround.

What a sigh of relief. I imagine these +35 year old American speakers parts would be a bit difficult to obtain - even more so locally.

So there you go... it does seem that I still have a wee bit of luck left in this world (considering the last year of plane ol bad run of luck for me...)
