Setting up a home LAN

I'm about ready to start putting in LAN cable around the house. Where in Cape Town do I get the hardware? Cable and plug points.

I would also appreciate your recommendations for a network switch. I have gigabyte a switch that I'm trying to repair (power supply faulty). I need a Plan B in case that doesn't pan out.
