Hey all,

Been a long time since I've posted here. A few years ago I asked for some advice on buying the Audioengine A5+ speakers. I've been using them along with the S8 sub for about 6 years and have loved them so far.

Things have changed a bit recently though. I've been branching out into recording and am wondering whether it would be worth changing to a more flat-response oriented setup. The entry level monitors I've set my sights on are the JBL 305P MKII's.

Now, I'm not an audiophile by any real measure as I don't understand every single spec on such speakers and don't look at frequency graph comparisons and such. Basically, I'm just going off 1) that the AE's are reputed to not have a completely neutral response which is unideal for mixing at home, and 2) this comparison video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HrYhXGABmM&ab_channel=DSAUDIO.review.

I've read that some people mix stuff on the AE's and don't mind it, but I'm concerned it'll complicate recording mixing and playback. I guess my main concern is whether I will be taking an undesirable hit in sound quality in changing from the AE's to the JBL's. The audiophile community on reddit tends to rave about the JBL's and say the AE's are overrated, but without hearing them side by side I don't really have a way of knowing for myself. So I thought I may as well ask here in case someone has some enlightening advice.

For clarity, my current system is:

Audioengine A5+ speakers https://audioengineusa.com/shop/wirelessspeakers/a5-plus-classic-speakers/
Audioengine S8 subwoofer https://audioengineusa.com/shop/subwoofers/s8-powered-subwoofer/
Audioengine D1 DAC https://audioengineusa.com/shop/components/d1-24-bit-dacheadphone-amp/

and my new system (in theory) would be:

JBL 305P MkII (a pair in stereo of course) https://jblpro.com/products/305p-mkii
JBL LSR310S subwoofer https://jblpro.com/products/lsr310s
Solid State Logic SSL2+ audio interface (I have already replaced my DAC with this) https://www.solidstatelogic.com/products/ssl2-plus

TLDR: is it a good idea to change setups for recording purposes, or will it not make much difference. Or is the above a bad move for any reason.

Kind regards,
Paul
