I've looked at the ?D?Appolito configuration? on some KEF, Tannoy and Quad speakers and have a reasonable understanding of Mr D?Appolito's concept as per his 1983 paper and it's aim to reduce comb filtering and evening out frequency response. I however have very limited listening experience with this type of driver configuration in speakers designed that way.

I'm interested in responses on the concept of simulating this arrangement using an upside down 2 way bookshelf stacked ontop of a 2.5 way floorstander in order to align the tweeters all in an attempt to minimise comb filtering and perhaps to improve soundstage and imaging.

These are matching speakers from the same manufacturer from the same range with the same drivers having the same specs and they have the same baffle width. They will be well driven by two separate but identical power amps in stereo mode controlled through a suitable pre-amp.

Could such an arrangement provide acoustic benefits above :

Option 1 : Only floorstanders used for stereo music and driven by either (1.1) a single power amp in stereo mode or (1.2) both power amps in bridged mono mode, one for each channel

Option 2 : Bookshelves separated at say the 09:30 and 02:30 positions 1m above optimal listening position ear-level driven by a single power amp in stereo mode and then the floorstanders at say the 04:00 and 08:00 positions with feet on the ground and tweeters at about ear-level.

* The clock-positions above refers to the relative positions of the speakers in the view from the optimal listening position with 12:00 and 06:00 being dead centre and 09:00 and 03:00 being the extreme left and right possible speaker placement extremities respectively.
