During the past few weeks, we have had 3 intrusions by robbers here. Fortunately, one bloke was caught in the act of breaking in and ran, one broke a wooden gate to gain entry but was stopped by razor wire and the third was also heard but not seen but his ***-end and shoe marks was found.
Yesterday, my very upset neighbour came over and informed us they had been burgled a few days after returning from abroad. She told us computers, tv's and other goods was stolen. We had not been informed of their absence and I did see unusual cars there and their ADT alarm did go off a few times.
On two occasions, I spoke to the ADT bloke and he informed me that it was just an alarm problem and that nothing was amiss. This was before the lady of the house came over and informed us of their losses.
Anyway, amidst all this crime and sleeping with weapons of mass destruction under our beds, my wife came back from church this morning and informed me her church - just around the corner from here - had an armed robbery earlier this week. Perpetrated by 4 armed men.
A few weeks ago, I spoke to the dog's vet about the goings on here and he showed me a new taser device he bought from a gun shop in Plumstead for only R185 incl VAT.
I knew he had bought another taser earlier and paid about R600 for it from a shop in Canalwalk. I didn't ask what became of this one but decided to buy myself one of the R185 jobs. Afterall, our vet is an educated bloke and he had previous experience with these things so one could assume he would have made an informed choice.
So I have been taking the cheapo taser on our walks. I never dropped it but yesterday I heard something rattling inside and decided to look inside as the thing is charged with mains current.
When I opened it, some bits of plastic fell out (probable stress breaks) and couldn't see anywhere where exactly the bits of plastic broke off. Before I opened it, I also noticed that the innards were loose inside the case.
The pic shows what i found - a piece of playing card separating the mains charging socket from the rest of the components.
All I did was to place two cork wedges on either side of the card and closed the thing again. All still works.
I write this incase you haven't seen what these things look like inside. Its 'specs' are 3800K volt. Not sure if this is believable.
