I am looking to adding a Stereo Amp to my existing AVR which has pre-outs. What would you guys recommend? It will be powering a pair of B&W 683's (s1)
My current AVR is 7.1 and has a 100w/pc @ 8-ohms output. It does sound good to me and will still be used for HT btw. I suspect my floor-standers may well be asking for more power here.
I think I heard it said that 100w/pc from a stereo amp is not the same as 100w/pc from an AVR due to the much cleaner watts from the more capable Stereo PSU. Is this true? When choosing a Stereo Amp for these speakers (B&W 683's) would 100w/pc be sufficient (spec-wise), or would it be better (in the long run) to go much bigger here? I went the entry-level route with the AVR since HT is not that big a deal for me, but in choosing a Stereo Amplifier I would want something pretty decent. Based on the findings of a recent thread I may even decide to go Vintage on this one. Also, when using Stereo through the new amp, I'd like the option to sometimes use the sub connected to my current receiver. The idea is that switching between Stereo and 5.1 (my pattern of choice for HT) should need no change in connections. It should be a seamless and convenient transition... Also, I recently had a compatibility issue with a sub not getting enough signal from a SW-out. Would such "compatibility issues" be something I need to consider when choosing a Stereo Amp? Are compatibility issues... an issue?
*I do realise these are somewhat "noob" questions, but bear in mind this is my 1st "real" AVR, and having options like pre-outs and multichannel inputs are still quite new to me. My budget for a stereo amp is around R3,5K - R4,5K max.
*PS. THOSE WHO WISH TO OFFER ME SOMETHING... PLEASE RATHER MAKE USE OF PM. This thread's purpose was meant mainly to be informative. I do welcome your offers but PLEASE PM instead.
