my buddy decided to get a new toy for himself but he will only install it sometime during or after this coming weekend so i have a few days to play around with it ..... he wanted to get a DAC and was toying with the idea of getting the Emotiva but that did not have the balanced outputs that he wants

so he looked at getting an audiolab M-DAC but he discovered that the Audiolab 8200CD also had the identical DAC features included and it was a pretty respectable CD player too so he went ahead and got one of those ..... heres some pics

so you can see the XLR based fully balanced outputs - the DAC features two optical inputs which handle up to 24bit/96khz signals and a USB input which allows for the same resolution for PC based audio and then it also has two coax RCA based inputs which handle 24bit/192khz signals

I will also try and hook up the PC to the USB input tomorrow - to get the cd part hooked up is as easy as unplugging a power cable and a pair of RCA interconnects then lifting the old player out and hooking this one in - but the PC bit of it will be slightly more involved because im going to use HDMI to the TV for the graphics and the HDMI splitter is a fair distance away so i have to find an HDMI cable long enough

I want to try out both the CD playback with all the filter settings as well as the DAC performance before i give this thing back to him - will also try his Denon PMA2000AE cd player too (I already purchased his Denon PMA2000AE amplifier - so the Denon cd player may match nicely with that or i will consider getting one of these as well) sadly though this one i will have to reluctantly hand back to him in a few days time

Then courtesy of Doug Dread over at Systemshock forums I landed up with another toy - he got himself a USB based cassette recorder so he had some stuff that he did not want to use and he donated it to my collection of vintage audio equipment ..... and its in priostine condition so im also going to plug this in and play around with it

its a California DC-3038 twin tape deck and this thing is practically brand new - just need to put in a new plug onto the end of the cable and then hook up the interconnects - also gonna provide a bit of nostalgic fun
