Hi all,
So now its my turn to ask the extremely over-asked question about speaker cable...
Let me first start this off by saying that I do not want to spend a fortune on speaker cable, at least not now (possibly never).
So I have my Onkyo HTIB S5405 and am currently using the cables which came with that (They are extremely small). Just got some B&W DM 602 S3's and the LCR60 S3 which will replace the center and fronts on my current system.
Now am I correct in saying that speaker cable generally use copper as the metal inside the cables and the more copper the greater the resistance, although the more power which is able to be put through them?
Therefore in theory you do not really want cable which is extremely massive, but at the same time you do not want cable which has hardly any copper in it? You kind of just want a balance between the two.
Now I am not sure how much of a difference the resistance makes or how much resistance is added when you add more copper.
What I am trying to get at, is whether it would be beneficial to upgrade my current speaker cable (was thinking only the ones which will goto the B&W speakers, leave the tiny Onkyo speakers with the cable which came with them). If so what sized cable should I be looking at (I would imagine that the size of the cable would be determined by how much copper it has and not really the insulation?) also does the brand make any difference?
I stay in Gauteng, which shops should I pop in to get the cable from (have heard Hi-Fi installations in Centurion are quite good and have a nice selection and decent prices).
Then only a slightly side note, my current AVR does not have terminals which can take banana plugs, although the speakers are able to and was thinking of maybe getting some banana plugs as its just easier - although am not sure how they connect to the cable (whether they are soldered or not). Also would it cause problems having banana plugs on only one end, I would think not?
Regards,
Psy
