Friday I got a hunch to sand down and respray some unused lead filled speaker stands I had lying in the garage. Each stand was made of 4cm square steel tubing and weights about 10-15Kg.
With the current heat I have disconnected my heavyweight amps and hooked up a cooler running DIY Alan Hobkirk pre and a recapped Quad 306 with some small 1 meter long ribbons.
Sunday evening the paint was dry enough and I mounted one speaker on the stand. With the stand the bass drivers were lifted about 15 cm from the carpeted floor.
I am more than pleased with the outcome. The Impact and dynamics are stunning. The little Quad 306 if not driven to hard is quite stunning and very musical.
MAJOR LESSON Learned: You do not need to spend a fortune to get good sound !!
Now i am wondering what variable caused the "improvement":
a) Firmer stand (Did not think it would make a massive difference as the speakers were already heavy by themselves).
b) Bassdrivers height increase
c) Why have I not tried this before- how many component changes could a proper stand have prevented..? (mental note- always use proper stands..) or:
d) Combo of the above?
Comments welcome.
