speakers

Hi , Can anyone please help with info as I think my knowledge is a bit rusted.I have a Yamaha RXV340 (60\65 W rms) and want to replace the speakers. I was told by a salesperson at a sound shop I cannot connect higher powered speakers as the speakers will blow the amp. He said I should replace the amp and then get higher powered speakers. My idea was to get speakers of about 80w (mission or another brand ) Any suggestions
