Hi all,

I know that specs never tell you how something sounds or what it looks like or whether you are impressed by the label and so on!

But when I am just looking around or reading posts (casually of course with never any intention of adding yet ANOTHER box to the collection) sometimes it can be a bit helpful with my own thinking processes i.e. internal "value for money" calculations.

So I looked at some power numbers - and I just happened to use Yamaha receivers for convenience but I am pretty sure one could choose almost any brand - the way that specs are presented over time has really changed. I tried quite hard to make a list of "like for like" power specs in watts, from the manuals.

Columns have headings A to J and they mean:

A = RMS, not USA /Canada, 20-20kHz,                            8 ohm, 0.6%THD
B = RMS, not USA /Canada,        1kHz,                            8 ohm, 0.7%THD
C = RMS, not USA /Canada,        1kHz,                            6 ohm, 0.9%THD
D = IHF Dynamic power, not USA /Canada, fronts, 8/6/4/2 ohm
E = IEC, UK, fronts,                    1kHz,                              8ohm, 0.6%THD
F = JEITA, max output power,    1kHz,                              8ohm, 0.9%THD
G = JEITA, max output power,    1kHz,                              8ohm,  10%THD
H = JEITA, max output power,    1kHz,                              6ohm,  10%THD
I  = JEITA, max output power,    1kHz,                              4ohm, 0.7%THD (this one used to sort the table from lowest to highest)
J = Zones and/or A/B speaker selection

(and the table was a real pain to type out and space/format!)

Most people would think that the three amps all with 100 watts per channel would mean the same power/volume/control whatever from an amp - but look at the J column: using another measurement there is a material difference between them. :2c:

So this means that I have made a bit of a boo-boo in my teenage 's system just to get the convenience of HDMI cables: swopping the 640 for the 567!
