Start of a Stereo setup

I am looking to start putting a stereo system together.  I currently have the following.  Onkyo 508 with zone 2 capability and a pair of Boston CR75 bookshelf speakers.

So I was thinking the following in the upgrade process... seeing that budget is limited.  I think I should get a relatively good cd player first because I have the amps zone 2.  Budget of about R3000. 

Any suggestions on what would be a good buy???

Then I will go for a dedicated stereo amp and later better and bigger speakers.

What do you clever people think.
