A few weeks back I got a pair of B&W LM1s and placed them together on a shelf about 50cm apart not really worrying about ideal speaker placement. I just wanted to test them.
I played some music, and the speakers completely disappeared ie. the source of the sound was not emanating from where the speakers were placed. It created a wide 180 degree stereo image. I couldnt believe this. Tried some other music and the same [apparently crosstalk cancellation creates this wide image but I found most [90%+] music to do this]. In fact most music created such a wide image but some 'mono' material [drums for example] in the music was dead centre coming from the LM1 - which was great also giving me the impression of having 2 wide sources and a centre mono source.
After googling a bit I see its called a stereo dipole https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereo_dipole or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambiophonics and this has now become my standard config for these speakers.
I run them on the B channel of my 356bee integrated amp with dm603s3 [placed correctly] on the A channel. Sometimes A and B together [although the sensitivities are not matched] but I really mostly prefer the stereo dipole to the standard stereo placement.
I did try the stereo dipole placement with DM603S3 but this didnt not work or do what the LM1s did.
Has anyone else had any experience in doing this? Which speakers are great for this? Could you share your experience?
