FOREWORD
I'm sure this topic has been visited here before... so why go there again?
Because times have changed and multi-channel music is about to go from "niche market" to mainstream...
and also because... I can!
What this thread is NOT! :nono:
It is not about Stereo vs Multi-channel for movies.
Multi-channel movies are best when played-back on a multi-channel system FULL STOP! No argument there...
because in movies, while completely unrealistic and gimmick-y, multi-channel is actually a great treat for the ears
however poorly executed.
What this thread IS! :teach:
It's about how you listen to MUSIC! That is Stereo vs Multi-channel (so 2.0 or 2.1 vs 4.0, 5.1, 7.1, 9.1)
and anything greater such as Atmos and regardless of 1, 2 or a swarm of subs. It's about listening to music
(both stereo and multi-channel recordings) whether these be "audio only" formats or audio/visual formats like DVD or Bluray.
Now, this particular topic has had many different opinions that appear OT and strewn across different threads. I thought it would be more useful to
consolidate these conflicting opinions under a single thread for easy reference. So... what are your thoughts on the subject, and why?
How I listen... :cleansound:
I prefer Stereo recordings played-back on a stereo 2ch system, or in my case 2.1 using the mains and sub of my HT system.
What about multi-channel recordings? Well... what about them? I don't enjoy gimmicks like wearing 3D glasses to get through a movie, nor do I enjoy
the idea of being stupidly placed in the centre of a soundstage with the rest of the band performing all around me. It's a gimmick and it's NEVER gonna work
for MUSIC regardless of how many speakers they wanna throw at us in future. When I sit back to enjoy my music I wanna feel like I'm watching a performance
"live" in my living room, a few metres in front of me.
But...
This thread isn't about ME! What is YOUR preferred method of listening, and WHY? :dop:
