Steve Newman Trio p(l)ay tribute to Tananas throughout South Africa
In association with Concerts SA, the Steve Newman Trio will be presenting throughout South Africa a tribute to legendary band Tananas.
In 1988 a trio of world-class musicians from South Africa and Mozambique came together through their improvisational and rhythmic sensibility establishing themselves as one of the most original and compelling groups to have emerged from South Africa at the time.
The Steve Newman trio ? Carlo Fabe (Drums, Peter Ndlala (Bass) and Steve Newman guitars will play a Tananas tribute. The trio will cover Tananas material as well as new pieces. Carlo and Peter also perform with Errol Dyers quartet as well as other Cape luminaries. Steve of the original Tananas remains a prominent feature in the S.A music scene. Steve has written a history for himself that few can equal. He is one of the most uniquely gifted guitarists ever to come out of our country, constantly collaborating with someone or other. Steve is at it again, touring South Africa with his annual concept that started in 2013 called ?Some Tananas Tunes?, a tribute to one of South Africa?s greatest trios of all time.
With Carlo Fabe on drums, and Peter Ndala on bass, reminding us of our beloved Gito Baloyi, this lineup has already wowed audiences in the Western Cape. In 2014 Steve Newman reunited on stage with Ian Herman, who flew from San Francisco to celebrate with Shifty records and do ?Some Tanana?s Tunes?. This reunion gave their fans an opportunity to relive the Tananas magic. Now in 2015 The Tribute promises to be all that we have come to expect from the music of Tananas. Contemporary world sounds flavoured with the herbs and spices from Africa to Asia, Cape to Cuba, and Caribbean to the Canary Islands.
Steve Newman Trio Tananas Tribute Tour is supported by the Music Mobility Fund, a funding mechanism administered by Concerts SA which offers opportunities for South African musicians to undertake live music tours.
Concerts SA is a joint South African/Norwegian initiative housed under the auspices of the Stakeholder Hub within the SAMRO Foundation; it receives financial, administrative and technical support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the SAMRO Foundation and Concerts Norway. The project aims to support live music in South Africa by finding and implementing ways to create a vibrant and viable live music circuit. It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciation of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools.
