I suppose this has been discussed a thousand times somewhere on the forum....but anyway.
I've got a set of ZRT 2 way ported speakers. Tuned to 30Hz, they do in room, in my view extremely well in the bass department. Completely free standing from walls they hit 20Hz on sweeps. So why this thread then?!
Well, as can be expected, the bass is there, but it can be better. Here's a REW measurement using my UMIK 1 with cal file:
As can be seen, distortion rises quite rapidly below 80 Hz. I would rather have that distortion line continue at -50dB, if I could. 8)
So I was thinking one option (and perhaps the best from a re-sale pov, if I ever wanted to) would be to build 2 conventional box subs.
Another option would be to build something like this (using 10" Revelator drivers):
In my case, I would not have standmount speakers on top though, the bass units would stand separate and would probably be driven from a stereo power amp.
Yet another option would be something completely different. Like a horn sub or open baffle sub. But I've not heard any of those, which makes it difficult to say if I'd like it or not.
The aim: Music
Bass: Must go low, but I like quite a dry sounding bass.
Space: 45m2
Loud: Not necessarily THAT loud. But I do like to go loud sometimes. :groovy:
Budget: At this point I have no budget for this. Just thinking about it. Well I've been thinking about it for long now....
Distortion: Must be very low or else I might as well go without.
The question: What type of sub will be best for me, considering the above.
