Firstly I honestly felt that a sub could be placed in a position which gave best results and thereafter any new sub/s that were being upgraded to could be used in the very same position. How wrong I was. Starting with a B&W ASW610 which was placed in the front right corner and optimized with both YPAO and by manual adjustments. Sounded good but the 610 lacks the low end grunt for HT. Added a 608 and the bass suffered terribly. Placed on left front with no edge wall so frequencies began cancelling each other. Removed the 608.
Replaced 610 with a PV1 in original front right corner and was disappointed with the lack of bass. Connected the 610 back up and added the PV1 behind the couch. It got worse. Total lack of coherence. Fiddled and fiddled but no luck until I reversed the phase on the 610. The PV1 suddenly woke up and came alive. I was amazed at the frequencies 2x8" drivers produced. But the 610 somehow seemed a little wanting.
Next step up: changed the 610 out for a MA RXW 12. Amazing sub with fantastic reviews and apparently one that can peel plaster off walls with its big amp and magnesium/aluminium cone. I was horrified. The bass went from bad to worse. When I switched the amp to disable the MA and only use the PV1 the lounge came alive again. This was without running YPAO. Ran optimization and it smoothened the response out considerably. I also changed the fronts to small and rolled them of at 80Hz which opened up the subs a tad bit more. But still I wasn't happy.
I then did what I was dreading the most. The "sub crawl"... I finally found that the MA doesn't like corners too much and the optimal place was at the front between the 683 and amp and away from any corner.
What a journey this has been. Still crawling around experimenting and looking for another position to better the low end bass hahaha. My poor torn jeans and scraped knees.
Has anyone else had similar experiences? Would love to hear them.
Ummmm could we keep responses non technical i.e. without graph sheets, white papers, DB tests meters etc etc. I'm more interested in the experiences u guys have had with your ears and knees so in other words the elbow grease type lol.
Also interested to see if anyone can offer me a solution to my current "lack of bass" issue
Many thanks in advance gentlemen and ladies ...
