Subwoofers for 2 channel/stereo/music listening

How many here use subwoofers for purely music listening?

I find in my large open plan setup the bottom end gets completely lost. I just recently hooked up a cheap Velodyne sub and it shows great promise. Purists generally frown upon the usage of subs for 2 channel listening.

Any thoughts?
