SURGE PROTECTORS

I was reminded today by someone else's misfortune that I don't have a surge protector on my AV+PC equipment.

I had some crappy ellies or whatever multiplugs that where "surge protectors" that didn't work for me that one time...
Also they caused hum on the subwoofer or speakers I don't remember which but I remember when I replaced it with a normal multiplug the hum was gone.

So the question is: What surge protectors that are not fully online UPS's are worth the time and effort to buy and install?
