I'm a member on a gaming forum and a fellow forumite was asking for some advice on a new surround system. I did my best to give some advice but there aren't many opinions for him besides my own. It can be really tough figuring out the best way to go about things especially for someone getting into it for the first time. Does anyone else perhaps have some advice I could offer him?

Hi,

Im shopping for a HT system, and am going through the process of reading through BBs, and demo-ing a few systems.

Thus far, the system I liked the best was a Polk Audio + Onkyo combo :
- Montor 50 Fronts
- CS1 Center
- PSW10 Sub, I think
- Monitor 30 Bookshelf surrounds
- Onkyo 506 7.1 AV Receiver

I will be using the system for 5.1, but stereo is probably the bigger priority.
I compared to a full Denon and a Marantz + Jamo system (didnt note the models), and the I felt the Polk sounded more lively, with what seemed to be better clarity.

Now from what I understand, the above is an entry level system. The only uncertainty for me was whether to get a AV Received with HD support. Still not sure about this one as the Onkyo 606 is 2x the price of the 506, approx.

My question to you :
- What other brands / combos should I consider ? (Above system is around R18k range)
- The CS1 center will not fit into my entertainment unit - I have a max width of 450mm - CS1 is 456mm. What would be a good alternative ?
- Is it wise to mix the fronts and center ?
- Is there a massive difference between the HD formats (like TrueHD) and the non HD Dolby/DTS formats ?

Thanks
