Any ideas on what is going on here?

I have one specific cellular phone only for the purposes of "What's app". Only a very few people know the number for this phone and it is used for nothing else, ever. Only a handful of friends could ever match the number to my name (and Vodacon could)

I got an SMS from Nedbank on it saying that they had failed to verify my fingerprints, and could I call at the Rustenburg branch. Since I have no Nedbank account I assumed it was a number error and deleted it.
A short while later, another SMS saying the phone number associated with my account was about to be changed, and it gave the new number that was going to take effect.

Nothing too odd so far - someone might have just mistyped one digit when registering.
BUT the new number is nothing like my number at all - not even vaguely similar.

I phoned Nedbank and they said they have had no activity using my ID number, but they have flagged the number for a query now.

Has anyone heard of a scam or fraud that looks like this?
