Synergy or common sense?

Synergy seems to be getting a lot of airtime on forum lately. Apart from my active ATC's paired with ATCs flagship preamp everything else I own is integrated (and therefore presumably by design synergistic). In any event, one gets the impression that synergy between components involves voodoo or blind luck and lots of experimentation. Is this really the case or is it more a matter of common sense e.g. ensuring an amplifier has sufficient welly to easily drive/ control your speakers and their load.
