I've come across some very impressive and challenging tracks including the Chinese Drums that Achim demos the Avangard Horns with, crazy noise from Yello, flying Spanish guitars from Rodrigo Y Gabriella etc.
The one at the top of my list for a while now is off the Jennifer Warnes album The Hunter. The track is entitled Way Down Deep.
In keeping with the title, the track starts with a drum beat. This is no ordinary drum though, it is a m03rs3 freestanding one that goes down to some serious low hertz. Once the beat is established, an electric bass guitar gets added to the mix and to make things more complex all sorts of additional percussion is added from shakers to snare drums, all spread out in the soundstage. Warnes' vocals is then added and a male backup singer is thrown right towards the back of the soundstage for good measure.
This is the track that blew up my Quad ESL's. They simply could not cope with the complexities of the percussion, and no, it was not the volume, just the transients between the various percussive instruments. You don't need to play the track at Rodney (RIP) levels, just at normal listening levels.
If you have the album, please give it a spin and let me know what you think. Unfortunately I cannot find it on Tidal (or maybe I just did not look hard enough).
What other system destroyer track are there that offer challenges to systems?
