Well, here goes. I've been mulling over this concept for so long, waiting until the uberamp is complete, that I'd almost despaired of getting going. When Francois sold me the Tannoy Lancasters, he mentioned that he had planned a Kingdom Royal build using them. This got me thinking. I'd been mulling over a Glenair build for a while, but this semed like it would be more fun. So I started modelling the various alternatives, Jim Gore measured the drivers, and I think I now have almost a viable design.
I also looked longingly at Family Dog's speakers, built with the same drivers by perfectionist.
Seeing as the uberamp has a biamping crossover frequency of 141 Hz (dictated by the capacitor values available when I built it), the speakers have been modelled on that. They will only be suitable for bi-amping, and then only with the specific characteristics of the uberamp. I chose 140Hz because I wanted most of the acoustic instruments and voice range to be handled by the Tannoys,as this is their strength. In the uberamp, the DJ amps have a wonderful midrange so it is they that will drive the Tannoys. Gecko's Naim/Avondale clones have an excellent tight bass, so they will drive the Beymas. 141Hz is just above low C#.
Here are the basics:
- POrted cabinet 270l, 132cm high, 56cm wide and 50cm deep
- Curved sides, rounded front edge
- Base and cap to be made from laminated MDF, rounded off to look moulded
- Finish in satin black with cherry inserts on the side
- Treble and midrange (above 141Hz) from the Tannoy Monitor Gold Dual Concentric 15" driver
- Tannoy in its own sealed enclosure of 50 litres inside the main enclosure
- Bass from a Beyma 15P80Nd, bought new from Xumbug (I'm a bit concerned about it though, as it models very poorly without the uberamp's EQ)
- On top there will be a recessed horizontal brass plate with three gold knobs sticking up from it. Two will be the standard Tannoy "treble energy" and "treble rolloff", the third will be "Bass attenuation" and will have an adjustable L-Pad underneath it.
- Each of the drivers will have an ornamental surround made of a polished aluminium quadrant rolled into a circle, if Topring Rollers are capable of doing it
These posts are going to be sleeved in glass fibre socks (they crack otherwise) and sawn into four down the middle to act as corner posts:
These 28 3mm MDF boards are going to be laminated to form the curved sides:
And this is the template to make the formers to bend the laminate layers. Jim Gore reckons I need to have one former every 10cm, so that is 13 of them(!) and thirteen tiedowns I must buy. I want ratchet tiedowns so I can get good pressure:
I'm getting my own table saw for Christmas, so I'm going to get busy with fibreglass/epoxy application on the posts, then I can start making the formers. This is shaping up to be fun - I'm hoping that they will make noble, equally ridiculous companions for the uberamp. :nutter:
