The Difference between PLASMA and LCD

There is something i think we all need to know.  What is the difference between PLASMA and LCD.  If i have a choice to buy either - what is better and why?  It needs to be explained in laimans terms to i can explain it to someone like my father who doesnt really understand technology if you get my drift...I hear rumours about stuff like when LCD screen came out for computers one of my colleagues said the LCD only has a 5 year life span ...now how does one checkup or research that sort of information???  I have tried wikiepedia, googled it but its too complex...
