Hi There,
I was wondering how the ambient temperature in your room (or car) effects the quality of sound getting to your ears (or your percention of the quality of it).
I remember back at boarding school during winter we would always be able to hear the trains during those cold Queenstown mornings, yet in summer we heard nothing at all. I presume this is because while the air is colder, the particles vibrate less so the air particles sit closer together and the air is denser. This in turn allows the sound to travel easier across these particles (the vibrations carry further). Much the same as how sound travels much further underwater because of the water density.
On Saturday last weekend in PE I was sitting in my car demoing the sound for a good friend, I distinctly remember how ridiculously hot it was but I also remember thinking that sound wasn't quite as good as it had been before (or as I remembered it). Hence how I came onto this debate in my head.
Comments anyone? Do you think the temperature makes a difference?
