We were affected by this string of cable faults here in Queenswood, Pretoria. Our power was off for four days. This featured on national news, which I found surprising. Perhaps because the local hospital was affected.  Our sidewalks looked like First World War trenches cos they had to dig down to replace the cable. Luckily our driveway survived, unlike my neighbours to the left. I wonder if City Council will pay them out for a new driveway....

Our power was off again yesterday. We are on a pay as you go meter and the power ran out. Went off to the shop and came back with my recharge voucher. Entered code and nothing - error 30 shows on the display. After trying a few times, I report the problem to the electricity department at the city council. "We will have to send out the technician to reset the meter". "What time can I expect him?" "Don't know, you will have to wait". This was before 9am.

The technician eventually gets to us after 8pm. He goes to the keypad on the PAYG unit, enters the code and voila - power back on. "How did you reset it?" "I didn't, and you can't reset these things - the call centre doesn't understand about them" Grreat. He told me that I should mount the keypad unit thing next to DB board, and power it directly from the main - before the earth leakage. Sounds a bit dicey to me....
