Ok, I've had it with phpBB. In the new year I want to re-launch our website with a new backend, and a new domain name (.co.za - suggestions for names other than "avforums" welcome). With that in mind, I'd like to offset the cost of running it slightly by perhaps placing some sponsored links on here.
Would it be too bad if there were some carefully placed text ads (Google AdSense) around the site? I'm not sure if those would generate much revenue however, not unless traffic significantly picks up. Alternatively, what about finding companies willing to sponsor us a couple of bucks a month? Or should we stay away from ads entirely and rely on a "tip jar" for voluntary donations? Again, we're not talking huge amounts of money - the monthly cost is in the region of R500/mo for everything which I've so far managed to avoid largely because we run on shared infrastructure. I'd like to find a more sustainable solution for the future though, and be able to afford nice forum software for example.
