I have a big problem at home , double storey/volume house with a lot of glass , we have an upstairs that gets incredibly hot , thick ceiling insulation hasn't helped , with electicity today , its becoming incredibly expensive to run 2 x 27000 btu aircons *they draw over 28 amps.. translates to 6kw/h*
Tinting the glass is not an option and heat resistant blinds are like R40k ...we have vertical blinds that are closed during the day.
At any rate , my roof is not vented and gets incredibly hot , I think , despite the insulation , this contributes to the problem. As one goes up the stairs , you can feel the temp , at least 5 more degrees than downstairs.
Roof vents can be the twirly whirley types , like this
http://www.windmaster.co.za/tornado_domestic.htm which can vent the roof and , as far as I can see , can vent the room as well (looks like you can duct em to the ceiling and thus suck out hot air upstairs) downsides are they are bloody ugly , only work when there is wind and I dunno what they will do in winter. Upsides are reliability and they will also work at night
The other option is a solar roof vent , like this
http://www.solatube.co.za/residential/product-catalog/solar-star-roof-ventilation/index.php
It doesn't seem you can duct them to a vent in the ceiling to evacuate hot air (tho its possible to put some sort of grille in the ceiling so the hot air goes into the roof and gets sucked out) , they don't work when the sun don't shine , but are far more elegant looking , downside is also that its motorised and thus reliabilty could be a problem.
Both solutions cost about the same installed.
The guys recon that just sucking the hot air out the roof without actually sucking it out of the rooms upstairs will have a dramatic effect on temps upstairs , I'm not that convinced...
Winter also worries me , don't want all the warmth sucked out...if I do go ceiling grilles , might just make a cover for them for winter......
Waddya think?
