My fathers generator was stolen at his campsite. He thought about rather getting a battery/inverter system as a replacement as it will be silent as well. We even think about going 12V all the way as nothing that we use there works with 220v only. We will just replace the globes with 12V CFL's. But he does not have a good track record when it comes to charging batteries, so I suggested why not get a dual system installed in his bakkie.
He went for my idea but was told at the auto electritions that if he just couple the batteries in parallel that the second battery will not receive any charge at all. This I find very hard to believe. They said he needed a converter. The cost of this item? R5500.00. That is more than a generator, then he must still buy the battery etc. What are this converter suposedly doing? Is it really needed? I can't see what can go wrong with permanently connecting one or more secondary batteries to the cars main battery. My reasoning is that he will in this way not forget to charge the battery as it will constantly be charged when driving.
We will use about 40 amps in a night. I believe two batteries in parallel will easily still start the bakkie the next day if 40 amps or less was used.

Last question. What sized battery (amps) is installed in the latest Ranger 3.0 diesel? I think it is best to get the exact same battery for the second battery. We just need an idea how many amps we have to work with in total.

Thanks guys
