I purchased Enrico Rava "Rava on the Dance Floor", ECM2293 on the strength of a review.
The story goes like this "....in my lifetime I only had a superficial acquaintance with Michael Jackson's work. But returning home from a gig a few days after his passing I found my wife watching a DVD of his Bucharest concert and was swept away as if by a tornado. From that moment onward I could not live without his music... I bought all his CDs and DVDs... Day by day I was discovering new treasures until I felt the need to delve more deeply into Michael's world. There was only one way to do that: play his songs"
Not being a Michael Jackson fan I was sceptical but feeling adventurous (I have no other Rava recordings) I purchased it off Amazon along with a whole bunch of CDs. The others are still in their plastic wrappers.
The twelve piece band with trumpets, tuba, piano, saxophone, percussion piano etc (note no vocals) do such moving interpretations live in concert with new surprises on each listen that it serves up a joyous musical experience each time. The songs that I am familiar with (from radio exposure) are faithful enough to the originals to be recognisable, but with new and interesting arrangements making for a compelling listen.
The songs covered are apparently not the obvious songs but include smooth criminal, thriller. Whether this is Jazz or not is irrelevant (IMO). That it is a discovery of note with wonderful music is.
So if you are search of something new to listen to then this will be some dollars well spent. So confident am I in this recommendation that if you go long and don't rate it then I will refund you the cost of the CD provided you send me the CD and promise me that you have not retained a copy in any form.
To partake in this underwriting exercise PM me with the subject line "Underwrite Me". Only five memebers will enjoy the underwriting benefit, unless your name is Guillaume then it applies irrespectively. I will reply and advise whether you are part of the underwriting or not. This is on a first come first served basis, with me applying my discretion not to underwrite (some members irritate me and i prefer not toexclude them publicly)
Happy listening
