I've started a new thread relating to Trompie's post, as that was already too long.
My initial reaction is that your son's expereince at NC was either because he had exceptional grades (I don't know), or he was indulged as a foreigner, or NC is simply desperate for revenue.
For each applicant to receive that level of chaperoning upon application is both unusual and impractical in any country.
South Africa has good universities and one gets what one pay's for and on a global level, South Africa represents good value for money on the Return on Capital Employed for an education
If one can afford to send their kids to an expensive USA university - do so, or else said kid's can fund themselves and spend the next 15 years of their career's paying off student debt, something South African students rarely experience.
One may consider a 4 year law degree from Stanford great, until one has to come up with the $220,000 to pay for it - that's R3M at todays X Rate and few job's, if any is gonna pay enough to pay back that debt before 40 !
A Chemical Engineering degree is $216,000 (R3M), as opposed to here in RSA where it's R160,000
Who would pay R3M to get an education in what's essentially a dead end industry.
