When events like this move from news in the paper closer to home my blood boils. :fuse:
My wife's aunt and her husband were attacked this week in their home in suburban Jhb. They are well into their 60s, retired and he has just beaten cancer. The assailants assaulted them, beat them to the floor, taunted them, played russian roulette with a revolver and when the gun (mercifully) mis-fired/jammed on finally chambering a round proceeded to pistol whip the uncle leaving the walls splattered with blood.
They left with the sum total of a phone and a watch and escaped the security company who were called out when he managed to briefly escape to hit the alarm button.
Not last year, my in-law's neighbours were beaten to within an inch of their lives with droppers and left for dead in a field by their Mozambican assailants leaving likewise with very little. The uncle lost one eye and has limited vision in the other with extensive scarring (not to speak of the emotional damage). Thankfully they didn't rape his wife. Another incident in the same community last year saw a lady slaughtered for wont of a better word.
A fellow church member was assaulted on his small-holding in Pretoria North. Thankfully they spotted something amiss in time and on that occasion one assailant took a slug and another got the wrong end of a butcher's knife. The assailants shot open the house door and started firing at the family.
On my side of the family, an uncle survived an assault with an AK47 on his farm taking two shots to the shoulder and arm (his farm manager was not as lucky). The unnecessary levels of violence are just too much. How does one respond to such callous violence? Post guards, install hardwood/steel doors and armoured glass everywhere and subject oneself to 24/7 surveillance?

How many fellow forumites carry? I am re-looking at my security in earnest.
