USB3 questions

Seeing as USB3 is becoming ubiquitous I figure its time to equip one of Asus my workstation boards with USB3 capability.  I see there are USB3 addin cards that provide USB3 ports and then there are SATA/USB3 adapter cards that enable USB3 devices to be connected to existing SATA ports.  Which would be the preferred way to go to maximise speed (I have free SATA ports).
