I'm new to the AV world, but have been browsing this forum for a while now.
I am a student and have recently inherited a vintage Yamaha CA-610 "pre-main stereo amplifier" as it says in the manual, that my dad bought brand new in his late teens. As I understand "pre-main stereo amplifier" is an old term for an integrated stereo amp.
The amp works fine and is currently powering a set of Wharfedale CRS3s (also inherited), and sounds really good considering the amp is over thirty years old.
I am looking to upgrade the speakers, with a possible view to upgrading to some sort of pre/power amp setup in the future as and when budget allows. My question is is it worth upgrading the speakers with the current amplifier, or would it be better to just wait it out and upgrade all the kit at the same time?
Would upgrading the speakers (baring in mind student budget) result in an improvement with the current setup, and if so, what kind of speakers should I be looking out for (most likely to buy second hand)?
The amp puts out 40wpc @ 8ohms.
