I keep a separate account for paying with card, debit orders, etc.  There is never more than R2000 more in there than I anticipate using.  I had a good friend who worked for Nedbank Fraud Dept and she suggested this idea.  It costs nothing more, and transferring more is a 1-minute job.  She has seen many instances of what you describe happening and its a pain to sort out afterwards

I do something similar, I keep a R1000 overdraft facility on my credit card and use it as a debit card, ie the balance is always positive and I keep it as low as required.
