hi All,

ok my background, firstly im a bit of a caraudio nut, i compete in iasca soundquality competitions,

in my vehicle im used to using an active highpass filter (24db/octave) for my "main speakers"/"front speakers"
at like 70hz... then to lowpass (also 24db/oct) my sub at around 75hz..

i was thinking while listening to my MISSION 702'S in my lounge, which are connected to my nad 302 amp.

that eventually when i implement a active subwoofer i would like to do the same...
with regular music its not always needed, but occasionally i listen to some electronica, drum & bass
or trance etc...
since this music is digital, alot of the bass content goes to well below the 70hz region...

This may be a dumb-ass question, but are their any sort of active filter units available for the hifi world?

because in my humble opinion a nice way to get smooth frequency response in terms of bass is to let your main speakers play down to where they are still reletively flat... say they can for instance play down to 60hz @ -3db, then 70hz would be a good cutoff point... rather let a big speaker like a subwoofer play the 60hz without the -3db rolloff... this is just an example...

what i kinda had it mind might be a FILTER BOX of sorts with 2 rca in and 2 rca out, with a dial to adjust the x-over frequency...

ofcourse the passive crossover inside the mission 702's could i suppose also be modified or replaced alltogether...

then another question, or rather opinion... ive read on many forums the debate of running 2 subwoofers or 1, i.e 1 subwoofer for every front speaker.

my 2c is that 80hz and lower is non-directional sound, providing a good 24db/oct crossover is used.
to me 80hz or 70hz at 12db/oct is quite directional.. some would say that the imaging and staging of your main speakers might be spoilt a bit by placing a subwoofer next to each of them....

having 2 subwoofers would seem the "best" proper way of doing it.... but then... the highend very expensive speakers dont have built in active subwoofers, why would this be? obviously for a reason...

some opinions would be great... also another question, many subwoofer amps have a HIGH INPUT (which i wouldnt want to use) and a PRE-IN (which i would want to use) the pre in is normally 1 rca.

how do i split the stereo2rca pair from my cdplayer or amp(nad 302) to go into the sub?

would it be L + GND + R + GND = L+R + GND.. I.E common the gnd and the l + r to go into 1 rca plug?

doesnt sound right

again this might be a stupid question, but what in otherwords would be the best way to get a mono rca from my nad 302 amplifier?

cheers
Anton
