Hi all,
So I've been using a NAD1050 as source with my SPL Phonitor / Sennheiser HD800 headfi rig for some months. But I also have the diminutive Nuprime uDSD, which was reserved mainly for loadshedding entertainment.
Then I loaned a pair of Audeze LCD2 from thomas24, and found them so dark without some EQ that they became completely unexciting and uninvolving. This was an interesting experience, as it opened my eyes and ears to take EQ seriously for the first time. When I applied some careful EQ the forward-of-neutral uDSD / Phonitor / HD800 trio became bearable and quite enjoyable for long term listening.
In the interest of maintaining some form of balance in my audio spend vs other household financial obligations I decided to sell the NAD1050, OK with the EQ'd uDSD for now. Just wished I had a DAC that would combine the resolution of the uDSD with the naturalness of the D1050.
Fast forward a couple of weeks and Stereosane gives a heads-up of a pair of Sonus Faber Concertos up for a good price. ... and I just could not resist ... gone are the rational thoughts about sensible domestic resource allocation. As my wife says one event called another and I start thinking about what a main system around the Concertos may look like. Just about then Victor (from the Listening Room in Benoni) sends a message ... the Wadia 121 that's been languishing on AVSA for some time is available again. He finds the box and the driver memory stick and the deal is done.
BTW ... Excellent buying experience and customer service from Victor and The Listening Room ... big thumbs up
So I get home with the Wadia ... as a proud new owner fulfilling a decades-long dream since I first heard the 2000 / X-32 combo in 1990. Baby Wadia it may be, but it's got the right name and the right heritage :groovy:
Curious to hear what the 121 sounds like, I hook it up to the Phonitor and HD800 rig at my headfi listening station ... and that's when it happened ... the purest synergy imaginable ... a blissful partnership that makes magnificent, emotional, engrossing music. Sheer listening pleasure; defying all attempts at analytical listening.
Not too sure what's going to happen to the planned main system, but I expect the 121 / Phonitor / HD800 pairing to remain intact for quite some time!
So what are your OMG head-fi moments? Those moments when you forget about the technological marvels between you and the performer and just let the music flow ...
