Hi, I was also in a similar position to you, once. Also listening in a small room. A center speaker has been essential to improve dialogue in movies and, depending on whether you use surround sound processing, very useful for that as well. Relying on stereo speakers to create a phantom center channel does nothing to clarify the frequently muffled and badly recorded dialogue in a lot of TV and movies. Besides, you can control the volume on a center channel. The problem I see, with many center channel products, is that they are overbuilt. Their main purpose is to reproduce speech, which has a limited frequency range and many of these speakers use unnecessarily large drivers and in some cases, are physically much wider than the ideal point source. In your scenario, you don't need a large box and the maximum wattage output would not need to exceed about 80 watts. Regarding timbre matching, most good quality speakers seem to have similar tone so using a center speaker made by a different manufacturer from your main speakers, should not impact your movie enjoyment. It certainly has had no bad effect on my movie enjoyment. The Bentley fc100 should be ideal. It ticks the right boxes for you. I see you are in Joburg. If you can wait a bit, I'll be back in town after the 27th. I have a small Sansui center speaker looking for a home. It was offered for sale a few weeks ago. You will be welcome to try it out and if you like it, we can take it from there.
