Which books should I get for 10 year old girls

In my hey days I loved reading.  I recall one book about a nuclear-capable AI drone that went crazy and a lot of Clive Cussler, James Hadley Chase and Sidney Sheldon stuff.  Oh man those were the days and those books were pure entertainment.

I want to get my kids (around 110 years old) some really memorable books this festive season.  Not the type with pictures and songs, real novels for kids.

If you know any that drove you crazy as a kid, please recommend.
