This is a question I've experimented with for almost 20 years and many of the answers are still eluding me.

Besides the usual and obvious factors that cartridges must be matched to its carrier ie the arm, the use of non-resonant materials used in their construction, the cantilever material and the perfect polish of the stylus and finally - the type and composition of damping materials all have an influence on how they sound - for better or worse.

Innumerable firms and individuals have tried over many years to 'invent' new ways of making cartridges - sometimes from the bizarre to the ridiculous but rarely with something altogether new and advantageous.
