Why is it that people complain about not being able to listen to High end gear?

But when Demo's are offered they back out.

I see it all the time on the forum.

People wishing they could listen to/ asking where they can look at or demo quality gear, yet when an offer is made there is never any time.

In a similar vein there are people who offer advice by stating that they have never heard XYZ component, but based on their reading/hearsay/perception something else is better. Offer these people an opportunity to listen to the equipment they have never heard and do they accept?
In my experience, rarely.

I'm not trying to start a fight, put anyone down or score points, I'm sincerely trying to figure this out.

My conclusions so far relate to ego.
If you never listen to anything other than your own gear, your opinion is never challenged. If however you actually try something different and you like it, it means that you may have been wrong before.

Are people that shallow?
