When your car is under motorplan you are at the mercy of the dealer and the car maker as to what is done to the car and what oil is used. If you step outside of their parameters they can scrap the motor plan, even if you service the car more regularly. Dealerships do deals with oil suppliers to supply oil that is in spec and obviously get it a bit cheaper. There is usually a preferred brand though, 2 years ago BMW moved from Castrol to Shell, worldwide. Yes if you take your out of plan car to a dealer you can supply your own oil, but the jury is out if it is actually used. My one car I service myself and it has lived on a diet of Shell Helix Ultra Extra since I bought it, it is now on 160 000kms The other car gets sent to a very good independent mechanic and I trust them 100% to use the correct products on the car, I could service it myself but I would rather an expert looks after it. On my race car it either gets Shell Helix Ultra or Indy Oil syntro.........but this oil is changed after around 600kms.
