Why were the old speakers (Pioneer, Technics, Yamaha) etc from the 70s and 80s fitted with woofers up to 300mm (12"), whereas today, a 165mm is regarded as big ?
My Monitor Audio woofers are only 140mm and so are many other speakers like it.
What prompted the change from 300mm and did those speakers, with the larger woofers produce lower bass (and heavier) than todays speakers.
Has there been a technological change in speaker manufcture over the past 20 years that will account ?
Except for the B&W 805, 900 series or a subwoofer, I rarely see woofers in excess of the 150mm mark.
Please comment.
