So I've been dying to do room treatment for a while now, but it's our livng room and my wife has been very supportive of my hobby so far so I didn't want to push it...but then I got an idea :O0:
So far I've managed to make slight improvements with furniture such as soft couches curtains and a rug but I still had a major problem with ringing, it was driving me crazy at louder volumes, I sat down a few days ago and looked at my room layout, it occurred to me that my front and rear wall were absolutely bare besides a reflective curtain about 2m behind me, it covers a Meduim size window. I got a torch with a narrow beam so I could see where my tweeters were firing, they were both hitting an area of the window. We never open these curtains as they let in to much light which shines directly on the tv, I managed to convince my wife that we need new curtains.. Well I didn't have to beg she was very happy to get new curtains, I made sure they were as transparent as possible with no back lining, I then bought 6 acoustic panels from Foamrite acoustics, 3 x absobers and 3 x diffusers which I used to cover the whole entire window area which was the first reflection area on my rear wall. Wow wow wow wow is all I can say, all of a sudden I'm not hearing so much ringing and the sounds are now more focused in front of me, the instruments have so much more presence, I think I was getting a lot of echo off the back wall which was really interfering with the focus of my soundstage, I only treated an area of about 2m squared, this is by far the most profound and cheapest tweak I have ever done. Getting rid of that rear wall first reflection has now made my soundstage so much more clear and focused, I spent the whole of Saturday and a lot of today just going through song after song, I have always heard room first and have always believed it but I have never had the opportunity to hear the before and after results, best of all it's concealed behind the curtains out of sight and it blocks all the sunlight to
A big shout out to my wife who is always supportive of my crazy hobby we all love so much.
Ps, don't ever think a little treatment won't work, do it in the right place and you will be blown away by how treating a small important area can make such an amazing difference.
