Reading the post in Vinyl on the ERGO Turntable turned back the Clock for me and got me on this topic...
I have been fortunate to have listened to many brands and Audio products over the years.
And there are many really good experiences that I can recall.
But two are standing out that I would like to share
It was early mid eighties. I grow up in Klerksdorp(FD's home town) with Western Bazaar being the only Audio store worth mentioning.(not much to mention past Japanese product)
So while studying in Potch and Vanderbijlpark I was introduced to the Audiophile world of the UK and beyond.
A trip to Jhb was unavoidable and became a monthly item on the calendar.
There were some true gems of Audio shops back them, and I explore them all.
On one of such trips I made my way to Hifi Instalations in Fox Street where I met the Infamous Barry Robinson(Ex Yamaha/ Balanced Audio and nowadays Sky Audio)
Barry was a salesmen for Jan Sime who owned the store together with Phillip Myburg.
Jan's Mom, Salome, ran the Vinyl and CD section. She was a walking encyclopedia on Jazz and Classical music.
I walked into the store enquiring about the ERGO Turntable and Barry took me to a small demo Room in the back of the store.
I can not remember the amplification, but the Speakers were the KEF 104.2's.
He sat me down, put on The Wall LP, switched off the lights and played the Chopper scene at insane volume.
This was the most realistic and Jaw Dropping experience I have ever heard that Chopper blades cutting through the Air, that day in that room.
Still remember it to this day 40 odd years later.
My other experience was with Lemmy David at Soundlabs in Milpark.
I went there to have my LP12 upgraded and he entertained me in their Main Studio.
The System was Apogee Scintilla/Diva speakers, Krell SA100 power, Audio Research SP11 pre amp and the top of the line, Linn LP12/Ittok/Troika.
This experience was not so much Jaw Dropping, but rather one of total Awe. I was completely mesmerized by the Scale and Musical performance of the Apogee Panels.
I knew right there that I was a Panel Man, and that my Audio Journey would inevitably ended with Panel speakers.
No surprise here that i became a Die Hard Maggie user and fan
