MP3 to WAV/FLAC converter Recommendation please

I was really intrigued by the comments that most people cannot tell the difference between MP3 and WAV, I wasn't even aware this was a debate, so I did a bit of research online. It turns out that popular opinion is that I'm completely wrong. The general sentiment out there is that most people...

    Head-fi maxi mini meet Pretoria / Centurion - 17 March 2016

Great gathering of enthusiasts and so much diversity of great gear, including self made from Javbug. The headphone & amp pairings were different in some unexpected ways, it made for an incredible opportunity to find a combination that really works well together without having to go through...

MP3 to WAV/FLAC converter Recommendation please

@PaganMcLoud  Thanks! I should mention that the credit for the coming up with process of subtracting an MP3 L channel from a WAV L channel is not mine to take: I saw it in a demonstration Tony Andrews did a while ago and have subsequently seen it preformed in a few online articles particularly...

MP3 to WAV/FLAC converter Recommendation please

...looking back I may have gone a bit overboard on the listening specs, in that environment you can't not tell the difference: all you really need is a system capable of producing a full range of sound with reasonably good resolution. The difference between MP3 320kbps and WAV while driving...

    Sennheiser HD800S

Wow dragonmts, I agree, in the US it seems to be only $100 price difference: HD800:      U$1,599 HD800-S:  U$1,699 http://www.wooaudio.com/headphones/ Can only assume Audicoonline / Sennheiser SA still has stock of the HD800 at the old Rand / Dollar exchange, in which case, the old HD800 looks...

MP3 to WAV/FLAC converter Recommendation please

I've been banging on about this MP3 vs WAV thing for a while now (although not in this forum). My 2c worth on the matter (sorry in advance for the essay): MP3 is absolutely distinguishable from 44.1/16 WAV, even at 320kbps, the proviso's are: 1) the sound system you are listening to it on is...

    Sennheiser HD800S

...also second Kamikazi's response to Wolvebain: the warmer HD650s will compliment the HD800s very well for a different type of listening experience that can be equally enjoyable.

    Sennheiser HD800S

Probably worth adding as a side note: the old HD800 has a substantial impendence swing from 300 up to 600 ohms at 100hz and then back down to 300 ohms again... combined with lower frequencies consuming exponentially more acoustic energy, if you are not using a sufficiently powerful dedicated HP...

    Sennheiser HD800S

I modded a pair of HD800 (referred to as HD800s, not the new S version), and then partially un-modded them by reducing the surface area of the absorbent veldt & thin foam by about 40%. I did this because I found I actually wanted the HD800 to sound just a little bright and edgy as is...

    Stax ear speaker static

That 'pop' is normal when adjusting electrostatics on your head. I have curiously had it pop on one occasion randomly when I was listening with flu, otherwise it should not 'pop' while you are listening. This is due to the slight air pressure change within the headphone pad between your head and...

It may be worth adding one or two Binaural recordings?

    Head-fi maxi mini meet Pretoria / Centurion - 17 March 2016

I have a few of my own favorite test tracks, it's probably highly personal as the best test track is the one you know backwards... here are some of the ones I often use: Bass / sub alignment to mid-hi (n/a for headphones): - Soul II Soul - Keep On Movin' Vocal (Mid / Upper Mid - where most...

    Head-fi mini meet Pretoria

Fantastic - definitely count me in, a Saturday or Sunday would be most suitable, but one week evening also works. I'll bring a few DACs, HP amps and some phones along ...and a few multi plugs ...some of the valves can take an hour of warm-up time to really come into their own.

    Hi-Fi : Science Or Art?

Being a geek I used to tend towards 100% science. I've subsequently come to a few realisations: ? In reality scientific measurements commonly used to rate systems on paper tend to under estimate the subtlety of human perception and more specifically, hearing. We can pinpoint the source of a...

    Help from Laurence Dickie

Hello Rodney I unfortunately do not have *any* experience with a side mounted bass reflex type configuration of the Giya. The technology that goes into making that speaker work as it does, is impressive. I'm particularly not sure what a triangular listening position would do to the timing of...

    Loudness of Speakers

Hi Timber Ha, well spotted, that was a typo, it was meant to be 113db for the compression driver efficiency, but in all fairness I was thinking of the Res5 which has dual compression drivers, most great single compression driver systems will be capable of putting out 109db but 110 is not...
