    CD Conversion

...hopefully the SBT can index much better. and with an ipad you have a controller in your palm instead of using the TV (mine is plasma and burns-in unless in 75BD pure audio mode that turns off on-screen display on the 751BD and the TV  :2c:

    CD Conversion

I rip CD to FLAC using foobar to a 1TB hard drive and playback on the 751BD that feeds into M1DAC or directly into my MF amp - too many choices! The 751BD navigation is poor - you scroll through everything; i work around that by storing FLAC into genres on my hard drive; makes navigation easier...

    b&w speakers why?

Yep I'm another B&W speaker user. To sum it up they sound great when correctly partnered: my b&w cm7+musical fidelity a5.5 int. amp+musical fidelity m1 dac+cambridge audio 751bd combination simply sounds phenomenal. Sure there are greater speakers out there; try finding them and auditioning them...

    Why why why!!

Hifi has been dead in this country for a long time! We are being feed plasticky HTIB by the major electronics retailers. Unfortunately people seems to like their 5.1/ 7.2 HTIB with bass boost, dynamic loud buttons and neon lights. You can still get great sound from a 2.1 system and lets face it...

    Swopping of CD/DVD's

to divert the topic a little; since one cant buy itunes in SA, does it mean some ipod, ipad, iphone, iwhatever users carry illegal music? to download itunes you need to set up a ghost profile saying you are staying in uncle sam's country. isnt that illegal? cd rippers carry legal music but...

    Dedicated CD player?

that audiolab cdp gets rave reviews. an oppo type bdp outshines many budget cdp costing <R10k. ultimately its the quality of the dac inside the player.

Why buying new in SA sucks

...doing homework does help. a cambridge 751bd on what hifi is ?800. importing it will cost you R14,118 (at R12.9 fx rate plus 14% vat plus 20% ad valorem tax) - ex courier costs. you can get it locally for R10,700 but you can also get it for R13,990! fx rate plays a part but i agree the dealers...

Vinyl LP sizes and player recommendation

@ Fdlsys, i will definitely pop around to audition those Garrard and Torens TT's. Wouldnt say a fully complete conversion; more like 50% there :D. And there's no way Fdlsys can be Don Corleone even if he tried hard LOL. the only drawback with vinyl is its delicate nature and gettin hold of...

Vinyl LP sizes and player recommendation

To update you all, Fdlsys sorted me out with a neat marantz TT and audio technica phonostage. Obviously we auditioned it, using his home built speakers (2 pairs!). The sound was simply too great to be true - all in a workshop full of press drill, stacks of equipment, projects, tools, etc. I got...

Vinyl LP sizes and player recommendation

thanks for the clarifying the jargon - i'm Y generation; not baby boomer ;). i imagine the sound of TT with built in speakers as weak, hence i want amp+speaker with TT as source. standmounts are ideal due to smallish room - 4mx3m and since its for an o'lady, heavy bass is a no no. no specific...

Vinyl LP sizes and player recommendation

@ Fdlsys: sure is potent! If getting a TT with a phono is hard, then what are my options? A cheap turn table+phono stage?

Vinyl LP sizes and player recommendation

Hi Forumers! I need help with buying an LP player. My mother has a collection of LP records from the late 70s / early 80s. Since her last LP player in the early 90s, her records have been gathering dust. She has decent albums: Dave Crusin, Bob James, The Commodores, Billy Joel, etc. Her...

i'm no computer geek but isn't uPnP better? i read a detaield write on slimdevices or was it mysqueezebox forum? anyway someone wrote that you need to run the squeezebox server in the background. even if you use a nas, the squeezebox must be running somewhere. why cant i just buy a powered hard...

    Network players and DAC

Hi All. There's quite a list of music network players out there. Any of you have experience with them? How do they compare to PC/ Laptop into DAC? The Squeezebox Touch is one such; relatively cheap. But it requires its own server software unlike others from Cambridge, Marantz, Musical Fidelity...

The Digital Experience - 4ways crossing

i concur...the service is pathetic! they just dont hv interest in guys looking for av/ hifi gear; ditto in-shop auditions. they reckon they stock good items - just buy it and f-off. but what do u expect from a shop that retails flat panel tvs, cameras, home appliances, etc alongside av/ hifi...

What makes people think CDs will cease to exist?

...until high speed internet connection is a reality, CD will still be around! LP are still around and so are tapes...maybe CD will become a niche like LP

    Whitney Houston dead.

...yep her earlier work was very terrific, and was way better than anything from mariah carey and her ilk could master! just like aretha franklin, her mid 80s material is below par compared to her earlier 60/70s work...
