Stereo vs Multi-channel for Music Listening

A couple of years ago when multi-channel DVD Audio and SACD had been introduced, I started a very expensive project of building a 7.2 surround system around my Reference Stereo system, using the stereo fronts and mono blocks as is, then using the pre-amp in pass through mode and add the rest of...

Wilson audio WITT - Anyone heard them ?

Fabulous restoration. I really did not imagine that the end result was possible. Will pay a visit soon.

    Manley 600 Monoblocks (Ichibin)...anyone heard this ?

I've never listened to them, however I've listened extensively to the Manley Steelhead phono pre-amplifier, and I know the VTL range of products very well. All that I can say is that the Manley Steelhead is the best sounding phono stage around, and I would prefer above ARC Ref 10 phono. That...

    Francois this is for you

Rodney, The G1s sound very good and they are my new reference, but be aware that the Salon2s perform very close and is overseas definitely better value for money than the G1s, if considered from a price to performance perspective. Can get away with less power in case of the G1s due to their...

    Francois this is for you

I moved the Jeff Rowland Model 9s to room2 and hooked them up to drive the Revel Salon2 speakers - they are massive and heavy, but a little bit closer to their aluminium flight cases now.  :) :) :) Room1 is still used for stereo (G1, DcS Vivaldi, Halcro,SME) and 7.1 multichannel (the ML436...

Duntech Sovereign - Anyone heard this ?

Francois, They are from my golden era - very good sounding. They love the Jeff Rowland Model 9 monoblocks, Krell Audio Standards, and a couple of other monster amps from the 90's :) :) :) :) :)

    JBL K2 - S9800 - Any comments on this one ?

Listened to the top of the range models with various front end and amps, and did not like them. That's why I did not even bother to make a mental note of the model numbers.

Wilson audio WITT - Anyone heard them ?

Achim, I just cannot wait for my next visit to my daughter down in CT, to pay you a visit and listen to the Trios. Time for something to dethrone my G1's.  :)

Wilson audio WITT - Anyone heard them ?

Mark, I can only agree with you. Over a period of thirty years, I've had most of the good sounding equipment as well, having auditioned them in rooms at home, as well as in dedicated sound studios like e.g. Dave Wilson's one at their factory. There are for sure equipment, room and cable...

    Software Product Key

If my memory serves me right, there must be a product key code printed between the two bar codes. From Office 2010 onwards, the key was printed inside the DVD box. Just phone local Microsoft. They are very helpful and will generate a new key after some questions.

What does "serviced xyz component" mean?

Just two more things to watch out for: Wet caps can start to leak electrolyte after many years of use, and the liquid running onto a main board or power supply will destroy everything if the leak occurs when in use. Contacts do get "dry" over time - I had a Krell mono block that started to fry...

sizing speaker vs room in general.

How big is the influence of cubic meters versus square meters? I've had my best results in rooms with very high, irregular ceilings, even if it meant digging out and go below ground level.

Does your system sound better when it's cold?

Eben, I must agree with you, sometimes the mood plays a big role, especially when it comes to different music genres. On another topic, go and study how dangerous certain medicines can be for an individual's hearing. Prolonged use of something like disprin/asprin (acetylsalicylic acid) can do...

Is it true that used equipment needs to be run in?

No, I doubt. Once warm, the sound character should be there. Used equipment should however be carefully auditioned in order to pick up sound defects like hiss, hum, distortion, channel separation, etc. I have experienced that certain high end cables (e.g. Cardas) do need some settling time after...

    Lexicon mc8 balanced - Value

I upgraded my Marantz MC / MM 9000 to a balanced Lexicon MC8 many moons ago. This was a very good sounding processor / preamp. I later upgraded to a MC12 V5 HD EQ, today still in service in my home theatre. The MC8 is highly programmable and versatile. Inputs and outputs can also be programmed...

    Google Chrome

Beware, that's something malignant. It stuffed up my whole Windows 10 installation. I was on the line to Microsoft Technical support immediately, reminding them of their claim that Win 10 is supposed to be immune against infestation. Their response: "Sorry to hear about your issues. All too...

How do you know if your sound is right?

Agree with Francois, furthermore: I grew up in a home where a Steinway & Sons piano was played every day for hours by my sister (she took music as an extra subject for years - even when doing her PhD in Organic Chemistry, she still continued playing the piano). During my student years at...
